OUGD401: Context of Practice - Avant Garde Cinema

  • Opposition to Mainstream Cinema - Doesn't get shown to a wider, mainstream audience
  • It doesn't include Plots, it's non-linear, non-figurative and has no coherent narrative
  • Poses questions rather than answers
  • A lot of different genres and aspects

  • Luis Bunuel - Un Chein Anadalon (1929)
  • Matthew Barney - The Cemester 3 (2002)
  • Oskar Fischinger - Spirals (1926) - Early abstract cinema
  • James Whiting - Lapis (1966)
  • Stan Brockhage - Black Ice (1994) - Short, handmade - Scratched / painted onto reel
  • Stan Brockhage - Mothlight (1963) - Uses actual moth wings instead of paint / scratches
  • Andy Warhol - Empire - Static camera filming the empire state building for 10 hours

Conclusion
  • Challenging and Radical Cinema
  • Takes the idea of cinema and looks at the medium from a fresh angle
  • Honesty and Integrity as they are not made for the money - Outside Capitalism
