OUGD501: Context Of Practice 2 - Studio Brief 2: Theory Into Practice Module Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout the Context of Practice 2 module, I believe I have built upon the research skills in which I gained during the Context of Practice module from level 4. Instead of just learning about historical contexts I was able to learn about the theoretical thinking behind them.

The academic writing I produced in response to the first studio brief of the module was more in depth as I was able to analyse and compare points from different sources in order to make my own informed decisions.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Throughout my time on the course to date I had not yet produced any packaging, as I was keen to improve my crafting skills I used the second Studio Brief of the Context of Practice 2 module as a opportunity to achieve this, producing three packaged subvertisements.

I believe the final outcome is quite professional in terms of the quality of the packaging and I also enjoyed the process, therefore this is a aspect of Graphic Design I would definitely consider re-visiting for future briefs.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I personally believe my strengths throughout the Context of Practice module have been in the understanding and application – through written and practical means – of the theories we have been exploring.

When producing the practical element in response to the second studio brief I particularly enjoyed communicating the theories from the written the element in a practice piece and therefore I will try to capitalise on this in future briefs for other modules.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I personally believe the weaknesses throughout the Context of Practice Module lie in professional quality of my final practical piece, which could perhaps be refined.

Another area of improvement which I will take in consideration for future briefs is the depth of the research I undertook for both studio brief one and two in terms of the range of different sources – not just internet and books – and the reliability of these sources.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. Produce more in-depth research
  2. Gather my research from a range of reliable sources
  3. Improve professional quality of final outcomes
  4. Develop my own informed opinions based on research
  5. Improve time management in terms of completing written tasks
