OUGD504 : Design Production - Studio Brief 2: Design For Web

Part One - History
  • The Internet was created in 1991, at a place in Geneva called 'Cern' where more recently, The God Particle was discovered using the Large Hydron Collider.
  • Tim Burness Lee wanted to create some way of sharing information between computers "...to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes..."
  • The first website was purely text based
  • All websites are stored on web servers, the first web server was created by Steve Jobs known as the NeXT computer
  • In 1992, the first image was put on the internet which was of an all female pop group founded by Cern employees. Their name 'Les Horribles Cernettes' corresponds with the initials for the 'large hydron collider'
Part Two - Terminology
  • Web Browsers format codes
  • HTTP
  • URL - Uniform Resource Locator
  • HTML - Hyper Text Mark-up Language
  • CSS - Cascading Style Sheets

  • Skeuomorphism - Imitating something physical e.g. E-books which mimic turning the page of a physical book
  • Book: Scratching the Surface
Responsive Design
  • The design 'responds' e.g. can be adapted to a variety of media using different screen sizes
  • The orientation changing from portrait to landscape when the iPhone is turned
  • The design decreasing when the web browser is readjusted on a Mac
Part 3 - Design
  • All websites are made out of grids - Can be applied to any website
  • What's the point?
Three questions:

1. What is the purpose of the website?
2. Who are the target audience?
3. What do the target audience need?
